Parkinson’s UK self-management

·       Parkinson’s UK’s self-management programme is “designed to give you support and greater confidence to take more control of life with Parkinson's in a way that's right for you”.

·       The programme is for anyone affected by Parkinson's -- people with the condition, partners and current carers.

·       It does not comprise talks by outside speakers, nor discussion of detailed medical questions; instead participants share experiences with others in a similar situation and discuss the practical and emotional impact of the condition. Groups are run by local, trained facilitators.

·       People tell us that as a result of taking part they feel more confident, positive, and in control, and are armed with extra friends with whom they can share information and knowledge.

There are 2 ways to take part:

face to face groups over the course of 3 days or 6 half days

online groups over the course of 6 weeks

Topics covered are:

               Making connections with others

               Looking ahead

               Looking at relationships

Focusing on what's important to you.

          Taking care of yourself.

Planning for the future and taking actions.

·       The programme is free and is administered by Parkinson’s UK using materials developed by them. To find out when the next one in your area will be and to participate you need to register and be selected by Parkinson’s UK central staff.
